Do Steam Brushes Work on Cats? What the Mist Really Does (and Doesn't)

2-minute read · Based on 141 public buyer reviews

The short answer

  • It isn't steam. It's a light, room-temperature water mist. Nothing heats up.
  • Good at: keeping loose fur on the brush instead of your sofa, and cutting static.
  • Not: a bath, a deodoriser, or a fix for skin, fleas or mats.
  • Best for: medium and long coats. Short, smooth coats won't notice much.
  • Heads-up: the soft hiss. Some cats need a few sessions to get used to it.

It's mist, not steam

Cool mist from the brush: room-temperature water, tap in short bursts, don't hold the button down

Steam is water heated until it turns to vapour. These brushes have no heater: a tap on the button pushes plain water through a tiny nozzle as a fine spray. What looks like "steam" in videos is that spray catching the light.

How it works

How it works: fill with water, tap and brush, push to clear

Slightly damp fur sticks to the pins and to itself, so more of it stays on the brush. When it's full, a push-release plate slides the fur off. No picking hair out by hand.

Little effect on short coats ~6

Is it right for your cat?

Works best on long-haired cats and double-coated dogs; less helpful on very short, smooth coats

✓ Probably yes if

Your cat has a medium or long coat

Floating fur and static bother you most

Your cat tolerates brushing, or you're happy to go slowly

– Probably not if

Your cat has a very short, smooth coat

There are mats that need a groomer or vet

Your cat is very sound-sensitive and you'd rather not train them

New to mist? Go slow

Four steps: start dry, mist away first, short taps only, end with a treat

The hiss was the most common complaint, and this is the routine owners described that worked. Keep sessions short. Some cats never like the sound, and that's fine: it still works as a regular brush with a push-release plate.

Quick questions

Is the mist hot?

No. It's room-temperature water. Nothing in the brush heats up.

Does it work on dogs?

Yes, on medium and long coats with loose undercoat. Very short coats see less effect, and big dogs take longer because the brush head is small.

Does it kill fleas?

No. It only sprays water. Ask your vet about flea treatment.

Can I add anything to the water?

Plain water only. Please don't add essential oils or scented products.

Why isn't it misting?

Check there's water and charge, then gently clear the tiny nozzle. Mist first, then brush, so fur doesn't block it.

How do I stop it getting mouldy?

Empty the tank after each use, leave it open to air-dry and wipe the brush clean. Don't submerge it.
